The Costay: A Timeless Handwritten Font for Modern Branding

I was sitting at my desk, staring at a blank brand board, trying to find the perfect typeface that could capture the essence of a new café I was designing for. The client wanted something warm, inviting, and personal—something that felt like a handwritten note from a friend. That’s when I stumbled upon The Costay. At first glance, it stood out with its bold yet elegant strokes, and I knew immediately it had the potential to be the right fit.

The Costay is a script handwritten font that feels both timeless and modern. Its design has a natural flow, with soft curves and expressive flourishes that give it a very human touch. It’s not overly ornate, but it carries enough personality to make any text feel special. I quickly realized this wasn’t just another decorative font—it was versatile, with enough character to work across multiple design contexts without losing its charm.

First Impressions on a Logo Mockup

I started by testing The Costay in a logo mockup. The café name was simple—“Hearth & Bean”—but I wanted the logo to feel cozy and approachable. Using The Costay as the main typeface gave the logo an immediate sense of warmth. I paired it with a clean sans-serif font for the tagline, which balanced the elegance of the script with a modern, readable base.

What I loved about The Costay was how it maintained legibility even in smaller sizes. I placed it on a business card mockup and saw that it didn’t become too delicate or hard to read. It still carried that handwritten feel, but it was professional enough for a branding project.

Exploring Use Cases Across the Brand Identity

Once the logo was set, I moved on to other brand elements. The Costay worked beautifully in the café’s packaging design. I used it for the product labels, where it added a personal, artisanal touch. On the coffee bags, it looked like a handwritten message from the barista, making customers feel more connected to the brand.

For social media graphics, I experimented with using The Costay in short-form text—like captions and promotional banners. It felt playful and engaging, especially when paired with illustrations or photos of the café’s interior. It also translated well to digital formats, such as the homepage hero section of their website, where it drew attention without overwhelming the layout.

In editorial design, I used The Costay for headlines in the café’s blog posts. It brought a sense of storytelling to the content, making the words feel more personal and authentic. Even in printed marketing materials, like flyers and posters, it stood out as a focal point while keeping the overall design cohesive.

Design Considerations and Practical Advice

When working with a script font like The Costay, it’s important to consider its role in the visual hierarchy. While it works exceptionally well as a display font or headline font, it’s not ideal for long blocks of text. I made sure to use it sparingly, reserving it for key messages and accents rather than body copy.

One thing I always check when using a new font is whether it includes alternates, ligatures, or different weights. The Costay came with a few variations that allowed me to fine-tune the look depending on the context. For example, I used a slightly bolder version for the café’s shop sign to ensure it was visible from a distance, while a lighter weight worked better for Instagram posts.

Font pairing was another consideration. I found that The Costay pairs well with a modern sans-serif like Montserrat or a classic serif like Playfair Display. These combinations created a nice contrast between the organic feel of the script and the structured nature of the other fonts, which helped maintain balance in the overall design system.

Testing Before Committing to a Full Brand System

Before finalizing The Costay as part of the café’s brand identity, I tested it across various mediums. I printed samples to see how it looked on paper, checked its scalability on digital screens, and even tested it in different color palettes. This helped me ensure that the font would perform consistently across all brand assets, from signage to packaging to online content.

I also considered commercial licensing. Since the café would be using the font in multiple places, including merchandise and packaging, I needed to confirm that The Costay was available under a license that supported these uses. Fortunately, it was clear that the font was designed for commercial projects, which gave me confidence in using it for the full brand rollout.

Overall, The Costay proved to be a reliable and expressive choice for the café’s brand identity. It added a unique personality to every design element while maintaining professionalism and readability. Whether you’re working on a small boutique, a skincare brand, or a creative studio, The Costay offers a versatile solution that can elevate your typography game without compromising on style or function.
